Product Description

AS A CHILD, Mario’s home life was steeped in drug abuse and violence, leaving him broken and vulnerable. In an attempt to feel secure and empowered, he entered the drug world, a move that would forever change his destiny. Falling into the same patterns of dealing, robbing and harming others as those who had destroyed his family, Mario robbed, shot, and killed a twenty-seven-year-old drug dealer at age sixteen.

Charged and convicted as an adult, he spent three years in solitary before the age of twenty-two. He served nineteen years in sixteen different adult prisons. During that time, he was kicked out of nine prisons and classified as “incorrigible.” Through maturity, the pain of imprisonment, and the nurturing of his parents, Mario found his purpose: to help others avoid a life of crime through education and self-improvement.

Reformed presents the intimate success story of one inmate’s transformation from prison to purpose.

MARIO BUENO is a published scholar, transformational speaker, and reform expert. Mario was released from prison on January 22, 2014. He graduated from Wayne State University in 2016 with a Bachelor in Business, and then spent time as a legislative aide for the Michigan House of Representatives. Today, his non-profit LUCK, Inc. employs certified, formerly incarcerated men to train and mentor at-risk youth and returning citizens in an attempt to safeguard the community. He is co-host of Main Street, a weekly TV show that pairs real main street economic challenges with tangible solutions.

  1. Must Read True Crime Book! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 2nd Feb 2018

Reformed: Memoir of a Juvenile Killer is a must-read book and an excellent true crime story that draws you deep into the world of a boy who sought destruction. The story-line builds as Bueno makes the greatest mistake of his short life and is tragically pulled into the adult prison system at the age of only sixteen. A broad audience will find that reading this book is an exciting experience and you will likely not want to put it down as each chapter pulls you further into his very interesting character reflections. Bueno gives heartfelt accounts of the trauma he was subjected to in his youth, which initiated his decent down a path of delinquency. When reading the chapters, you feel as though Bueno is personally speaking with you as strong emotions seemingly jump off the pages from the story-line. He vividly describes how he sought knowledge and transformation while he was in prison through reading and mentorship, while many others became institutionalized. Bueno is the exception not the rule! The discussion of prison life is not only accurate but gives you a glimpse of the intricate and often hidden world of the Carceral State. These descriptions will make this book an excellent choice for college students studying criminal justice or social work. Bueno’s transformation happens incrementally throughout the book, which creates anticipation for the reader. His redemption comes full circle towards the end of the book as he becomes a leader in his community around Detroit upon his release from prison after serving nearly two decades.
