Damage Control

Product Description

On September 10, 1981, Detective Commander of Manhattan South Homicide, Lieutenant John Patrick Donnellan, gets an urgent call that a famous actor has been found dead in his luxurious penthouse apartment.

Donnellan races to the scene to find the Chief of Detectives already at the apartment talking on the phone with headquarters. Donnellan moves straight to the body. A slight bruise is visible on the back of the head but there are no other marks. Initial impression: a robbery, as the victim’s Rolex, wallet, jewelry and other valuables are missing. Then Donnellan learns that the dead actor had an early morning visit from a beautiful woman who was seen briskly leaving the skyscraper before noon.

The Chief of Detectives hangs up and alerts Donnellan that minutes after the murder was broadcast on the radio, the deputy mayor started working damage control at a feverish pace. His aim is to keep the media focused on the angle that the murder was a crime of passion rather than another random act of violence in a frightened city already on edge. In one of the deadliest years in New York City history, this murder stands out among the rest. And with only weeks before the mayoral election, all eyes are on the City’s response.

Donnellan, well known in police, political and media circles as a straight talker with a cynical wit, is warned by the most powerful politician in the City to keep a lid on media leaks – and himself – or he will be off the case. Vintage Donnellan sarcasm, scorn and mockery must be bottled-up. But with all the buffoons, phonies and opportunists mixed up in this case, keeping his mouth shut might be his toughest challenge as he navigates through uncharted emotional, media, organized crime and romantic networks in pursuit of the killer.
